Richard III. The first day of filming (22/09/14)
Here’s a (relatively) short follow up to you-all-know-what :)
I knew (as most of us did) that ‘Richard III’ filming would start on Monday (22/09/14) on the grounds of Ashridge estate. From the set pictures posted on twitter I figured that they would be filming inside the tent camp and – add bushes on the sides to that – it might be difficult to see anything. But I live in North London, and there is a train station nearby with quick train connection to Berkhamstead and Tring (rail stations closest to the estate), therefore I decided to give it a try anyway. ‘You never know your luck’, as Arthur Shappy would say :)
I arrived there some time at noon and was rather surprised to find out that I was the sole representative of Sherlock-fandom/Hollow Crown fans/Cumbercollective and other respectable organisations :) A bit later a Japanese girl has joined me, and for the rest of the day there were only two of us. Some locals were passing by back and forth, but that was about it.
It all turned out exactly as I suspected (the filming was going on in the middle of the tents). Benedict was there, but, due to the ‘seats with the limited view’, it was rather difficult to tell what scenes exactly they were shooting. The only thing we could do was to pass the camp by between the shots via the narrow footpath and try to have a quick look of what was going on.
I had a good laugh about the costume, though. About the colour in particular. Entirely black dress in combination with black horse and scowling expression. If I were King Edward IV, I would have become instantly suspicious. Though, maybe, in the 15th century they still didn’t know what every child knows these days: the one dressed in all black and with evil intentions written all over their face – that’s the villain! Oh, BBC, seriously!
After some time they made a break for lunch. I noticed that on his way back to the set Benedict was walking already with a limp and shoulders hunched.
The last scene for the day (and they hadn’t even been shooting it) was Benedict on a horse (a very nice surprise indeed :) ). From what I gathered they were practicing how he should move around the set and for the camera, and left the actual filming of it for the other day. He left the set at a trot and then galloped the short distance to the car waiting for him. All in a costume! Aaargggh! (no pictures, unfortunately. But we do have a vivid imagination, don’t we?). That Japanese girl was waiting for him, but he didn’t stop and didn’t sign her anything (maybe he didn’t notice her, maybe he was in a hurry, hard to tell).
And that was it for the day.
Sorry for that maybe there’s not as much information about Benedict as some would have liked, but that’s all I’ve got.
hope that was at least of some interest,
